Growth notably benefited from a rising uptake amongst men aged 30-years-old and over, with this group becoming more concerned about their long-term health and thus striving to lose weight. There are numerous state-of-the-art gyms in Hong Kong and membership rates increased strongly during the review period. The main factor constraining growth in gym membership rates is high prices for membership, however, with many consumers viewing price plans as excessively expensive.

Competitive Landscape

Sports nutrition is highly fragmented, including numerous niche players offering specialist products. "Others" thus accounted for 78% value share

in overall sales in 2013 and dominated every product area. "Others" however lost share in most product areas in the year, due to stronger in-store advertising and distribution for the leading brands. The exception to this trend was protein bars, where "others" gained almost two percentage points in value share in 2013 over the previous year. This was due to retailers seeking to offer more affordable products in this area in the hope of boosting sales.
