At the end of July 2012, more than 2,000 cardholders were affected by a fraud after their credit and debit cards were cloned in ATM machines. According to the Superintendence of Banks, CLP540 million was taken from the clients of eleven National banks. This brought forward the initiative of implementing electronic chips in debit cards. Initially, the implementation of chips was expected by 2014 and only for credit cards.
