2014-04-01 00:49:01 - Off-Licences in the UK - Industry Market Research Report - a new market research report on

The story of the Off-Licences industry over the past decade has been a turbulent one with strong declines in enterprise numbers and revenue. Traditional specialist off-licences have struggled under the weight of predatory pricing by the supermarkets and the drag of the economic downturn. As their sales and margins collapsed, many off-licences were forced out of the industry.

First Quench Retailing exited in 2009 and in 2011, Oddbins also went into administration. Over the five years through 2013-14, industry revenue is estimated to decline at a compound annual rate of 5.3%, bringing total revenue to £3.0 billion. As the UK economy plunged into a recessionary period, disposable income shrunk and consumers cut back on discretionary products such as alcoholic beverages.
