Pet superstores and pet shops in France begin to feel the recession during 2013

No particular change is likely to impact the competitive landscape for the other pet food category in France in 2013. As in 2012, the competitive environment remained rather concentrated with the top three players accounting for less than half of the category value sales. The remainder should still be much more fragmented, with dozens of specialised players holding value shares of less than 5% in 2012.

Other pet food should experience the same key industry trends and developments in 2013 that shaped the previous year. The category is likely to suffer from the ongoing maturity of bird and fish food due to the ageing and decline of their consumer base. Growth in current value should remain positive in these areas only

thanks to ongoing price increases. Surprisingly, the most dynamic niche will be food for reptiles, notably for pogona, while products for small mammals will continue to bear the brunt of the declining fad for nouveaux animaux de compagnie (NAC, new pets).
