The company focuses on developing compact facilities located near the feedstock supply, shortening transport distances. The company is working in partnership with GreenField Ethanol. The company has received financial support from governments and agencies including Natural Resources Canada, Sustainable Development Technology Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Its production process changes one tonne of raw material into 360 liters of cellulosic ethanol. The company's plant produces around 5 million liters of ethanol from creosoted electricity poles and other available waste materials. In 2010, Enerkem announced project financing for the construction of waste-to-bio fuels plant located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The financing was provided by Rho Ventures, Braemar Energy Ventures, BDR Capital and Waste Management and Cycle Capital. Enerkem is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
