The Asia Pacific (APAC) region is blessed with rich coal deposits, the majority of which qualifies for commercial production. According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy for 2011, APAC had 292.5 billion metric tons of commercially exploitable coal, accounting for more than a third (35.3%) of global coal reserves. China's share was 14% while Australia, India, Kazakhstan, Indonesia,

Thailand, Vietnam and New Zealand made up the rest.In 2011, the APAC region contributed approximately 67% towards global coal production. Among the top five global coal producing nations, four belonged to APAC, with China contributing 45% towards global production, the US 13%, India 9%, Australia 6% and Indonesia 5%. The region's coal production is expected to increase at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.1% to reach approximately 7 billion metric tons by 2020.
