According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy for 2011, APAC had 292.5 billion metric tons of commercially exploitable coal, accounting for more than a third (35.3%) of global coal reserves. China's share was 14% while Australia, India, Kazakhstan, Indonesia,
Thailand, Vietnam and New Zealand made up the rest.In 2011, the APAC region contributed approximately 67% towards global coal production. Among the top five global coal producing nations, four belonged to APAC, with China contributing 45% towards global production, the US 13%, India 9%, Australia 6% and Indonesia 5%. The region's coal production is expected to increase at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4.1% to reach approximately 7 billion metric tons by 2020.
