2013-03-01 08:35:43 - Latest study re-affirms RNCOS’s perspective, that each state should have at least one proton therapy center, says RNCOS.
A recent study “Proton Beam Therapy and Treatment for Localized Prostate Cancer: If You Build It, They Will Come” published in the JAMA Internal Medicine found that men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer were more likely to be treated with proton therapy if the technology was available nearby. The study evaluated the treatment choices of nearly 20,000 men living inside and outside the regional market for Loma Linda University. Nearly 9% of the patients living within the referral region received PRT, compared to less than 2% of patients living outside the region.
RNCOS, in its latest research, “US Proton Therapy Market Analysis to 2017”, had also found that cancer patients deemed medically eligible for proton therapy, had to travel long distances
to avail the therapy as few centers were present throughout the US. As of 2012, only 10 states had a proton therapy center. These centers together catered to just approximately 5% of the total cancer patient population that needed this therapy.
Besides, even five years down the lane, only 15 states are expected to have a proton therapy center, leaving behind huge chunks of cancer patient pool, deemed medically in need of proton therapy. Healthcare entities, both public and private need to take a note of this and find viable solutions to this looming problem.
