Reinsurance in the Netherlands, Key Trends and Opportunities to 2016 - a new market research report on companiesandmarkets.com
In terms of written premium, the Dutch insurance industry is one of the global leaders. During the review period (2007â2011) the nation´s reinsurance segment registered varying growth rates on a year-on-year (YOY) basis, due to the adverse impact of the global financial crisis and the subsequent European debt crisis.
The primary application of reinsurance in the Netherlands is to manage exposure to weather-related events, natural disasters and the larger claims of general and motor third-party liability coverage. The life and personal accident and healthcare segments recorded an increasing share of the premium ceded to reinsurers. However, the non-life segment, which historically had a reliance on reinsurers for the purposes of sharing risk, recorded a decline in the percentage of premium ceded.
Key
Highlights
⢠The growth of the reinsurance segment will be primarily driven by a changing market perception towards risk sharing due to uncertain economic conditions. The growth of the segment will also be supported by the increasing written premium values anticipated from the country´s collective insurance industry.
⢠The proposed regulatory changes in the reinsurance segment will expose new challenges and opportunities with respect to competitive differentiation. Increased levels of consolidation among insurers, on account of Solvency II implementation scheduled in 2014, will impact ceded premiums and retention levels.
⢠ING Re (Netherlands) NV, a subsidiary of ING Verzekeringen NV, is the largest reinsurance company in Netherlands.
⢠Insurance companies need to maintain high levels of cost, and administrative efficiency in order to be successful under such competitive pressure. Moreover, Solvency II legislation, which is based on economic risk analysis, is expected to improve levels of competition, which will have a direct impact on the reinsurance segment and the demand for reinsurance protection.
⢠The presence of large reinsurers such as Swiss Re, Munich Re and Reinsurance Group of America (RGA) makes the segment highly competitive. However, the segment faces several challenges in terms of renewals and macroeconomic difficulties, as subdued economic growth and low interest rates continue to depress investment returns.
