2013-04-20 07:41:18 - New Energy market report from GlobalData: "Saudi Arabia Eying Nuclear Power Despite Substantial Oil and Gas Reserves"

Saudi Arabia has formulated extensive plans to pursue the development of nuclear power, largely due to rising power demand, the need to mitigate harmful environmental impacts caused by fossil fuel powered plants, and to conserve oil and gas reserves for exports. The country has a large-scale development plan to build about 17 Gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2032. Saudi Arabia views nuclear power as an effective solution to some of the key challenges facing the country, such as water scarcity and the degradation of the quality of the environment. Nuclear power plants have several advantages such as non-toxic gas emissions and large-scale economic production. To support nuclear development plans, Saudi Arabia has entered into various agreements with countries

which are well known for their expertise in the field of nuclear energy. The agreements will help the country in building a sound regulatory structure and in developing the technological expertise essential to safely use nuclear power.
