2014-02-10 03:08:06 - Tanzania Power Report Q2 2014 - a new market research report on

Tanzania´s power sector has been plagued by years of underinvestment, with a rapidly expanding population driving up consumption needs. The country is responding by implementing a series of projects, although a history of delays and cancellation leads us to believe that some will not be realised.

Tanzania aims to begin exporting power by 2015, although we do not envisage this making much of a difference to our import/export data. The country has much improvement to make if it wants to meet its electrification target of 75% by 2035.

Tanzania´s power infrastructure has been plagued by inefficiencies and underinvestment, both in terms of installed capacity and the transmission and distribution network. Power infrastructure in the country is largely underdeveloped, with the World Economic

Forum ranking the country 131st out of 148 for the quality of its electricity supply in its Global Competitiveness Report 2013-2014. In addition, power generation in the country currently relies heavily on costly natural gas imports and unreliable hydropower, with adverse effects on energy security and the state´s budget.
