The overall demand for olefins (ethylene and propylene) and polyolefins (polyethylene and polypropylenes) increased in 2011. All the major geographies except Europe registered a positive growth in demand as well as production. Asia Pacific has continued to support the demand for these petrochemicals. However, the annual demand growth in 2011 was substantially lower than the annual demand growth in 2010.

The slowdown in manufacturing activities due to the eurozone debt crisis and tight credit policies in China were the main reasons that the growth of the olefins and polyolefins

 

 

markets was lower than expected in 2011. As China is the backbone of the global olefins and polyolefins industry, lower demand from China restricted the overall growth. The Middle East remains one of the largest producers of olefins and polyolefins.
