Tourism is one of the important industries for the Sri Lankan economy, contributing over 8% to the country´s GDP every year. Strategically positioned at the crossroads of both western and eastern sea routes, the island nation continues to be a favorite destination when visiting South Asia. Inbound spending in the country increased from US$750 million in 2007 to US$1.3 billion in 2011, registering a CAGR of 140.6%.

India continues to be the primary source market, accounting for around 20% of inbound traffic, followed by the UK and Germany with over 15% and 5% respectively. Leisure remained the main purpose of travel for inbound tourists in the review period, and accounted for 84.6% of the total visits in 2011.
