Kavaklidere Saraplari AS continued to lead sales in the Turkey wine market during 2012 with a brand share of around 27%. The company owes its success to its long-established presence in the country. Its flagship brands such as Yakut and Cankaya have shares that are larger than the total share of many small local players.
Wine registered a slight decline in 2012 reaching TL57 million litres of sales. The main reason behind the decline was the successive increases to excise taxes in October 2011 and September 2012, which were disproportionately high for wine. As a result, consumers switched to cheaper categories such as beer.
Wine is predicted to see a total volume CAGR of 1% over the forecast period; a major improvement in comparison with the negative review period CAGR of 7%. Wine is expected to recover from the effects of the recession and unit prices are expected to increase in light of the premiumisation trend and the trend towards rosÃ© wine, which is on average, a more expensive type.
