New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research
BMI tempered its forecasts for Ugandas mobile market following lower than expected figures from operators and the regulator. Nevertheless, we continue to forecast very strong growth for the market overall, as it remained just below 50% penetration at the end of 2011. The strong growth offers many opportunities for the countrys five operators. With several internationally-backed players in the market, Uganda remains an important market for growth in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Although growth prospects are good, operators still face some significant challenges in Uganda, namely the price war that took up much of 2011. Market leader MTN announced in September 2011 that it would increase tariffs following a year of price declines seen across the country. Its rivals Orange and Warid Telecom
followed suit. No end of year data was available for 2011, so we have yet to see the impact this has had on the market, but BMI believes it will take some time before customers increase their spending again, and the impact will be felt mostly in subscriber growth rates.

High inflation was just one of the external factors affecting the operators decision to raise rates. Plummeting ARPUs were the main cause behind the change of heart and BMI believes reversing the damage will be an uphill struggle.
Although BMI expects a slowdown in mobile growth, we see this having limited impact on the expansion of fixed-line services in the country. There was a slight decline in fixed lines in Q211. However, BMI does not expect this to be the start of a decline in this segment of the market.
The fastest growing area of the market is mobile broadband, although the latest figures show that fixed broadband services are also generating strong growth. There are ten times the number of mobile broadband connections to fixed broadband connections and BMI expects the former to remain the dominant internet connection type in the market. However, we believe the strong increase in fixed broadband subscriptions is a reflection of strong developments in telecoms infrastructure and international connectivity that has helped make prices more attainable for Ugandan consumers.
