There is no question that the past few years have been difficult, but recently Ukraine had started to look better on the consumer side, with private household expenditure up strongly since the start of 2011. The recovery in consumer spending has however been losing steam of late, and high inflation continues to weigh on real wages. We continue to view Ukraine as one of the least attractive regional markets for food and drink producers, with the country characterised by both modest rewards and high investment risks, although its longer-term potential is substantial.

Key Company Trends

MHP Looks to Expand to EU: Leading meat processor MHP has recently revealed that it is considering expansion into the EU poultry market through the possible acquisition of meat processing companies in Germany and other EU countries. Targets in Italy, Slovakia and France are also being considered, with the potential deal estimated in the range of EUR100mn to EUR150mn. The start of Ukrainian poultry exports to the EU has already been approved by the necessary regulative bodies.

Metro Plans Convenience Store Launch: In winter 2011, Metro Group was reported to be planning a chain of convenience stores in Ukraine under the Moy Magazin (My Store) banner. The stores will be operated on a franchise basis with a pilot network of 10 stores operating mainly in the east of the country. The outlets will offer about 500 stock-keeping units, 150 of which will have to be Metro private label products.

Key Risks To Outlook

Economic Recovery Faltering: We note that the country's balance of payments dynamics and sovereign debt profile continue to deteriorate at an alarming pace, and a weakening global growth picture bodes ill for Ukraine's export-dependent economy. In addition, the delay in agreement on the next tranche of IMF funding is likely to result in more Ukrainian dependence on Russian financial resources.
