2012-10-24 17:37:47 - Ultrabooks market to face fierce competition from the iPhone 5 and Kindle Fire HD

The Ultrabooks market has been forecast to exceed shipping of 190 million units by 2018, due to the rich features they offer in comparison to a regular notebook. The Ultrabook is defined by Intel as being any notebook using Intel processors and meeting certain chip manufacturer specifications. However, in general the term is being used for notebooks that are lightweight (less than four pounds), ultra-thin (less than 2.1cm thick) and have screen sizes varying from 13 to 15 inches. The next generation of Ultrabooks, with additional features such as full touch capability, GPS, and gesture and voice recognition, among others, are key factors further expected to drive market growth. However, present day figures are not as promising with only only 10.3 million Ultrabooks

to be shipped in 2012, down from a previous forecast of 22 million units. The 2013 forecast has also been cut from 61 million to 44 million units. To succeed, Ultrabooks need to become available in the $600 price range and drop down from their current lofty $1,000 price tag.The high prices of Ultrabooks compared to notebooks and tablet PCs is a major market challenge for manufacturers like HP, Dell, ASUS and Acer. With the economy in its current state, Ultrabook sellers may have trouble finding buyers at the current pricing, especially with fierce competition from new mobile computing gadgets such as the iPhone 5, Kindle Fire HD and forthcoming Microsoft Surface. The Ultrabooks market is evenly split across major regions with North America and Europe taking the lead in terms of sales. However, emerging markets such as China, India, and Latin America are expected to witness rapid growth and drive future growth within the industry. For more information on the Ultrabooks market, see the latest research: Ultrabooks MarketFollow us on Twitter @CandMResearch
