2014-02-17 16:13:03 - Canned/Preserved Food Packaging in the US - a new market research report on companiesandmarkets.com

Aluminium/plastic pouches experienced phenomenal 22% growth in the United States preserved food packaging market during 2012 as many apple sauce manufacturers began to use the pack type. The pouch uses a plastic screw cap closure and allows consumers to drink apple sauce through a small plastic tube. Parents like it as it easily allows them to feed children on the go or pack a lunch without having to add in plastic utensils, as are typically needed for single-serve apple sauce in a thin wall plastic container. The new packaging is led by apple sauce brands like GoGo Squeez and Motts Snack and Go pouches.

In 2012, metal food cans continued to decline in canned/preserved food, with packaging unit volumes dropping by

over 1%. With the exception of canned/preserved vegetables, which is the largest single category of metal food cans in canned/preserved food, most of the canned/preserved food categories recorded positive growth. Canned/preserved soup and ready meals were areas of particularly strong decline, as consumers either grew disinterested with the category itself, or manufacturers introduced new non-metal food can packaging that consumers found more convenient to use and carry.

Canned/preserved food packaging is likely to perform poorly, with retail unit sales predicted to decline by 3% over the forecast period. Americans will begin to feel more comfortable about spending money on value-added grocery items as the US economy recovers over the forecast period. As such, unit sales of canned/preserved food will decrease in most categories, with many consumers trading up to fresh or chilled food products for many nonprotein areas, such as fruits and vegetables.
