United States sauces packaging market: 6.0 billion units sold during 2012

Thin wall plastic containers was the fastest-growing area in the sauces packaging market with 1% growth in 2012. One of the key reasons for this growth was the retail introduction of Heinz Dip & Squeeze. The product is a small packet of ketchup that allows consumers to choose whether they want to squeeze out the ketchup on to the food or use the package as a dipping container. In addition, the company released a balsamic vinegar variety of ketchup that was met with a great deal of fanfare due to its sophisticated and unique flavour. The new product was marketed heavily through Facebook and other social media sites. In addition to this, thin wall plastic containers were further helped by

 

 

growth in dips.

Glass bottles declined by 2% in 2012, as gains in spicy/chili peppers were unable to completely outweigh declines elsewhere. Some of the main brands within spicy/chili peppers, such as Tabasco and Franks Red Hot, typically come in small glass bottles, and continually introduce new variations that help to stimulate packaging growth. However, other areas, such as soy sauces, have started to see declines due to both a rise in foodservice use as well as concerns about the high sodium content of soy sauce by some consumers.

Wet/cooking sauces are expected to experience steep packaging decreases in the forecast period, declining by a CAGR of 3%. This is partially due to losing much of the benefits of recessionary pressure forcing consumers to eat at home. In addition, many consumers see these sauces as being unhealthy, and the slow but ultimately steady expected recovery will likely push them towards making healthier dishes from scratch. This may be changed if new introductions, such as Campbells Skillet Sauces, are able to make an impact on consumers, but, currently, there are few positive factors that help this area of sauces, dressings, and condiments.
