The United States laptop market saw revenue increase by 17.9% per year over the five years to 2012, reaching a value of $78.6 billion, with an expected growth of 13.6% in 2012.The US laptop market has experienced aggressive growth over the last five years, encouraged by a number of factors.Demand for laptops has been encouraged by overall growth in the computer market, with about 76.5% of US households expected to own a computer in 2012, up from 69% in 2007.Rapid technological advancements, combined with efficient production methods have caused retail prices to drop dramatically over the past decade, making computers more affordable than ever before.Laptops, in particular, have seen their price plummet over the last five years, which has resulted
in a rising number of consumers opting for these versatile and portable computers versus their clunky desktop counterparts. The greatest threat to the future prospects of the laptop retail market is increasing popularity and proliferation of tablet computers. Tablets fulfil much of the same functionality as laptops, but also offer a touch-screen interface that has won over a number of users.Already, in the nearly three years since the introduction of the iPad, a number of consumers have opted to purchase a tablet and either delay their purchase of a laptop of purchase a tablet in lieu of a laptop. The iPad saw 17 million units sold between April and June 2012. This brings it to a total of 84 million iPad sales. That´s more iPads than any PC manufacturer sold of their entire lineup. The company has gone from a 62% market share last year to 68% as of today.Tablets outsold notebooks in the US in the fourth quarter of 2012, beginning a trend that will accelerate through 2013 as the new form factor begins to usurp traditional computers.A total of 21.5 million tablets will be sold in the fourth quarter, compared to 14.6 million notebooks and "mini-notes" - otherwise known as netbooks. It´s even possible that in 2012 as a whole, tablet shipments in North America could pass those for notebooks. And for 2013, tablets will outstrip notebooks - by 80 million to 63.8 million. For more information on the US laptop market, see the latest research: US Laptop MarketFollow us on Twitter @CandMResearch
