US meal replacement market led by Abbott Laboratories when including EAS products in 2012, accounting for 24% value share

Convalescence is expected to see tremendous growth in 2012 as the health benefits of the category start to resonate greatly with consumers. With many elderly consumers in need of regular dietary supplements to maintain a healthy lifestyle, convalescence products appear to have become a common method to satisfy this need. In addition to providing a source of nutrition, these products benefit from being easy and quick to consume, a trait which has become increasingly important to older generations.

Abbott Laboratories, when including EAS products, has maintained its leading position in meal replacement in 2012, accounting for a 24% share of value sales. Abbott is present in both the convalescence and meal replacement slimming categories, with the Ensure and EAS brands among the most popular and respected, with Ensure in particular experiencing a significant increase in consumer usage.

The growth of meal replacement products is expected to improve substantially over the forecast period with an overall increase of 15% in constant value terms to reach sales of US$3.8 billion by 2017. While value sales are expected to rise substantially, volume sales growth will be considerably lower at 5% as the growth of convalescence products will largely be offset by flat overall volume growth in meal replacement slimming.
