Key Factors Are Cyber Security and "Green Building" Compliance
Burnaby, British Columbia CANADA, February 13, 2014 /FSC/ - Viscount Systems Inc. (VSYS - OTCQB),a leading edge, high technology supplier of security systems and software, announced today that the company has received provisional approval for its Freedom access control architecture from the General Services Administration (GSA), an independent agency of the U.S. Government. GSA is responsible for supporting the adoption of interoperable and standards-based access control technologies to secure U.S. Federal Government facilities from physical and cyber threats, in a program called FICAM (Federal Identity, Credential, and Access Management). Viscount's architecture is the first new topology to be approved under FICAM. Final product approval is subject to additional solution tests.
provisional approval marks an important milestone both for our company and the industry," noted Stephen Pineau, CEO of Viscount. "It signifies U.S. Government acceptance that traditional control panels are no longer necessary to perform physical access control security functions, which is the foundation of our Freedom technology architecture. To receive approval we had to demonstrate that our topology meets both commercial requirements and government mandates. Our submission focused on the fact that as a software-based system we can comply with cyber security requirements and eliminate the need for expensive control panels and wiring. The initial FICAM topology Version 13.01 ( www.idmanagement.gov/documents/provisionally-approved-ficam-test ..
)released in the fall imposes new requirements on traditional control panel suppliers that necessitate the addition of secondary control equipment for each door called secure controllers, which may significantly increase the cost of control panel-based systems. In addition, we provide a dramatic reduction in both the power required to run these systems and future electronic waste. These advantages enable our clients to save money and comply with U.S. Government Green Building initiatives."
Mr. Pineau continued, "The new Cyber Security Framework released by the White House reveals a number of standards involving the convergence of access control security and cyber security technologies. The Framework documentation describes how physical access to resources and facilities must be secured and monitored to detect potential cyber security events, and how personnel activity must be monitored to detect potential cyber security threats. We believe that Viscount's Freedom technology is well positioned to continue to serve its growing base of both government and commercial clients."
About Viscount's Freedom Access Control Solutions
Freedom is the first and only access control system that allows entry devices (ID cards, RFID readers, biometrics, etc.) to be connected to, and controlled by, standard building IT networks without requiring expensive control panels and wiring. This eliminates up to 80% of the cost of traditional access control systems and provides a green, environmentally friendly solution. Viscount's technology also enables existing IT databases (Microsoft Active Directory or LDAP) to replace the software component of traditional systems. As a result, the Company's technology drastically reduces system costs while providing a much more secure access control solution.
