The beverage packaging market in Western Europe grew by just under 1% in 2011, marking a five year period of slowing progress. Nevertheless the market achieved volumes of 170 billion units, retaining its position as the worlds third largest market, still ahead of fast growing regions such as Latin America. Forecast volumes show some slight improvement, with a predicted 1.2% CAGR, through to 2016, indicating that the region will remain an important volume player going forward.

Undoubtedly, beverage habits and consequently packaging demands are changing, creating new opportunities and above average growth for some pack types, with the biggest shift being away from glass bottles and towards a variety of other pack types such as PET bottles and metal beverage cans. Innovation and flexibility are key factors to success in this market, with cost and environmental issues also being at the forefront.

Key Findings

-Western Europe saw growth continue to slow in 2011, although it remains a very sizable market for beverage packaging, at 170 billion units, and offers some growth opportunities despite its maturity.

-There continue to be considerable shifts between pack types in the market, with glass losing out to PET and metal beverage cans in key product growth areas. Cost and environmental factors are key drivers in this.

-PET is lightweight, affordable and recyclable, as well as being highly flexible in terms of design and shape capabilities. It succeeds in its ability to meet the requirements of brand owners, retailers and consumers, hence its continued popularity.

-Drinking habits are changing, which is impacting the growth of different types of packaging. Habits are moving away from unhealthy alcoholic drinks (in particular beer) and sugary soft drinks, with growth coming from waters, juices and sports/energy drinks.

-Bottled water is the most popular beverage, providing a boost to PET bottle volumes, while other pack types, such as beverage cans and liquid cartons, are also taking a share of this growth.
