New York, NY -- Like so much in our culture these days, old technologies are finding new life by incorporating digital elements that not only revive them, but make them futuristic. Now the same ethos is happing in the traditional world of tattoos.
While conventional tribal bands, ankle butterflies, and full arm sleeves remain popular, technologists are sensing that the opportunity has arrived to push body art to the next level to make it as functional as it is artistic.
"The human body itself has become a valuable canvas for tech developers," says Daniel Levine, the Global Editor of WikiTrend.org. "We are seeing an increasing number of innovations that are reinterpreting the meaning of tattoos, many of which will surely become
ubiquitous in years to come."
One artist, for example, has embedded a digital storage chip under his skin that can interact with the Near field communications (NFC) reader that is integrated with many mobile devices. A simple scan over the body with a smart phone reveals a dynamic image. And because the storage chip can be re-written, its tattoo can be changed on a whim.
Medical professionals are also embracing variations on the tattoo as a way of monitoring patients. Researchers have developed medical tattoos that keep track of patients vital signs, even from long distances. The tattoos, which are applied directly to the skin and feature tiny electrodes, monitor bodily functions and activities, as well as detect any difficulties a patient may be having during the healing process.
“Tattoo technology is a good example of how common items are meeting science to create entirely new products that, in some cases, have a major impact on everyday life," said Levine, the trends spotting Editor of WikiTrend. They also point to a future in which we can expect even more tech to be implanted in our bodies.
